To help international students gain a deeper understanding of traditional Chinese culture, experience its richness, and to facilitate the promotion of Chinese, School of International Education, in collaboration with relevant departments, held an event “Perceive China, Experience Traditional Chinese Medicine” on March 20th. Over 20 international students from countries including Morocco, Bangladesh, Uganda, and Zambia participated in the event.

At the beginning of the event, international students participated in a knowledge-sharing session about TCM, “Prevention Before Illness: Health Starts with Conditioning.” They learned about TCM culture and its history of a millennia, as well as its theory, which is the essence of Chinese culture. This activity allowed them to know more about TCM culture. After that, through activities like free medical consultations, tasting herbal tea, and experiencing massages, the students had a complete and immersive experience of TCM culture, which demonstrated its charm.

Aya from Morocco exclaimed, “I didn’t realize that herbal tea could have such great effects on the body. In the future, when we drink tea, we can also embrace the idea of TCM’s health preservation.” Muni from Pakistan commented, “Today’s event is more than meaningful. We not only learned about TCM but also experienced such treatments as bone-setting and physical therapy, which deepened my understanding of Chinese culture.” At present, TCM stands as a “health ambassador” that fosters cultural exchange more profoundly on a global scale.

This event provided a platform for international students to experience the glamour of TCM culture of our country. Specifically, it promoted the essence and knowledge of TCM culture. Importantly, the event helped them know more about Chinese culture, which bolstered the communication and influence of Chinese traditional culture on the global stage.

In the next steps, School of International Education will further explore innovative methods for the ideological and educational development of international students, building upon the aspirations and primary tasks outlined in the “TCU Consensus” and “TCU Action” initiatives. In this way, the school strives to offer more paths for international students to probe into Tianjin and Chinese culture so that they can tell Tianjin’s stories together with China's stories well and present a true, multi-dimensional and panoramic view of China. Consequentlyour university can play an important role in nurturing international students who both appreciate and contribute to China, and promoting the Belt and Road initiative.
